What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is the process of bleaching teeth to make them lighter.
Your teeth will not become completely white, but will look several shades lighter.
Teeth whitening is effective on natural tooth enamel. It cannot be carried out on dentures, crowns,or veneers.
The whitening effect can last for from 4 months to 3 years. Reducing your intake of tea ,coffee or red wine will reduce staining after whitening.

The Whitening system

When a whitening product is applied to the tooth, it breaks down into water and oxygen ions. The oxygen ions enter the enamel and attack the long stain molecules to effectively break them down to be short and colourless. These short and colourless molecules are then naturally removed from the tooth by saliva. The intensity of whitening is related to the number of oxygen ions available and the length of time they are on the tooth

The take-home day kit contains 6% hydrogen peroxide, but has a neutral pH.It works faster than the night kit, which contains between 10% and 16% carbamide peroxide. The day kit is a higher strength product and therefore needs to be worn less.
The range of available strengths is designed to enable me to choose the most appropriate level of active whitening  to suit you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long will the whitening treatment last?

This depends on the person and their oral habits. Whitening may need to be touched up every 1 to 3 years, without which your teeth may start to stain.

Can we predict a result?

Not all cases are predictable. I will  discuss the cause of staining and which type of whitening would be best suitable to your needs.

Is the treatment safe?

Yes. Clinical studies have shown that bleaching with carbamide or hydrogen peroxide if done correctly under the application or instruction of dentist, is safe for teeth and gums

Are there any side-effects?

For people who follow the instructions  and the Instructions for Use that come with the products, the majority will have no side-effects. However, some will experience temporary sensitivity (dull or sharp, sensitivity to hot or cold). This will subside after several hours of stopping the treatment and won’t leave any residual problems. The wear times can be shortened or made less frequent or teeth can be treated with a desensitiser. Abstain from carbonated drinks, citrus foods and beverages to avoid sensitivity.

How long does it take to whiten my teeth?

Using a take home whitening system, it can take approximately 5 – 14 days.

Will my teeth just keep getting whiter the longer I use the gel?

No – they will reach a plateau; your teeth cannot whiten past their natural shade. Whitening should be discontinued when the teeth do not appear to change any further or when desired shade is reached. It is important to follow the instructions. Using whitening products for longer than instructed can have harmful effects on the tooth structure. It is recommended to take photographs of teeth pre-treatment to use as a comparison throughout the whitening process.

How can I tell my teeth are getting whiter with take home whitening?

It can be hard to notice a change in shade when using a take home whitening system. It is recommended to take photographs of tooth pre-treatment to use as a comparison throughout the whitening process.

What if I have restorations in my teeth, will these change colour?

Whitening will only remove any existing stains on the restorations but it will not change their original shade. The restorations will only need to be changed if the whitened teeth are lighter. This is usually done a few weeks after the completion of the whitening procedure.

Is teeth whitening safe during pregnancy?

It is not recommended to use teeth whitening products during pregnancy.
